About Severn Valley Railway

The Severn Valley Railway is an award-winning popular heritage railway attraction, running across 16-miles of Worcestershire and Shropshire countryside. Visitors can step back in time and experience the golden age of travel with journeys behind original steam trains and heritage diesel locomotives. Discover beautifully restored original stations along the line, plus fascinating towns and villages.

Opened in 1862 after a nine-year building project, the Severn Valley Railway was originally part of the much longer Shrewsbury to Hartlebury line. The original line contained 15 stations. The Bewdley to Kidderminster section, or loop line, was constructed by the GWR, who ran many of the railways in the area, and opened in June 1878.

For more than 50 years, the Severn Valley Railway has been creating memories for millions of people from all over the world. Join us for your unforgettable day of adventure and travel by vintage steam and diesel-hauled trains, on the UK’s leading heritage railway. Start your journey at Kidderminster, Bewdley or Bridgnorth and with a Freedom-of-the-Line ticket, you choose where you go, how long you stay and how much you fit into your day. With our Freedom of the Line ticket, you can travel all day, visiting every station, including The Engine House at Highley – our best-value and most flexible ticket. Use our timetables to help you plan your day in advance.

You’ll want to make time to visit the jewel in the crown of the SVR! Our visitor centre is next to Highley station, and it’s where you can get up-close-and-personal with some very special locomotives. Check out the impressive blue-liveried LMR 600 ‘Gordon’, as well as LMS Stanier 8F 48773, which had a famous encounter with a camel in World War II, and many more full-size, out-of-service engines.
